In a powerful display of batting, Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill took the Pakistani bowling line-up by storm during the Super 4 stage of the Asia Cup on Sunday (September 10). Their dynamic partnership, which clocked in over 100 runs, set the tone for the innings and has since become a talking point among cricket pundits.
Wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik, while discussing the match on Cricbuzz, commended the openers for their fearless approach, especially against the formidable Shaheen Shah Afridi. Sharma's audacity was evident right from the get-go, as he dispatched Shaheen for a six in the very first over of the match. Shubman Gill didn't hold back either, as he continued the aggressive onslaught, making a strong statement ahead of the ODI World Cup 2023.
Karthik opined that such a dominant performance by the Indian openers would certainly plant seeds of concern in Pakistan skipper Babar Azam's mind. With the ODI World Cup just around the corner, teams meticulously analyze the form and strategies of their opponents. And performances like these certainly tilt the balance of power, setting psychological precedents.
"The way Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill batted vs Shaheen Afridi, will worry Pakistan. I think the conditions suited fast bowling at the start of the innings, but India called the shots," Karthik said on Cricbuzz.
However, it's worth noting that Shaheen Shah Afridi showcased his resilience and skill by bouncing back during his second spell. He outsmarted Gill with a slower delivery, securing a crucial wicket and preventing further damage.
"It becomes tough as a batter to pick Shaheen Afridi's slower delivery because of his wrist flick. Second time Shaheen Shah Afridi has deceived an Indian batter," Karthik further added.
