Highlights:

Hardik Pandya scored a resilient 87 off 90 in the Asia Cup's encounter against Pakistan on September 2.After a shaky start India posted a total of 266 but the match was called off due to persistent rain in Pallekel.

Former India's star batter Mohammad Kaif showered praise on Hardik Pandya for his notable evolution as a responsible batter. When the chips were down, Hardik rose to the occasion and scored a fighting 87 in the crunch Asia Cup game against Pakistan. In a conversation with Star Sports, Kaif emphasised the growth in Pandya's game, especially after taking on the Gujarat Titans' captaincy in the Indian Premier League.

Kaif specifically highlighted Pandya's impressive half-century against Pakistan during India's Asia Cup 2023 opener in Kandy, Sri Lanka. Pandya managed to score 87 runs off just 90 balls, aiding India in putting up a formidable total of 266 runs in the first innings at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.

"This change has come since Hardik Pandya became the Gujarat Titans' captain. He has learned to take responsibility. He has played at No. 3 and No. 4 as well and the biggest thing is that Hardik has learned how to mold himself according to the situation," Kaif stated.

Pandya's timing couldn't have been better as he walked in to bat during a critical period for the Indian side. India was struggling at 66 for 4 when Pandya and Ishan Kishan orchestrated a rescue act. The duo went on to create India's highest fifth-wicket partnership in Asia Cup history with a 138-run stand.

"When he comes at No. 5 or No. 6, he plays the big shots. When he comes at No. 3 or No. 4, he knows he has to build a partnership, play steadily, and take his time. He showed that by doing it today (Saturday) because the situation was extremely grim when Hardik Pandya came to bat," Kaif added.

Kaif also commended Pandya's adaptability and expertise in playing different kinds of shots. Pandya, who has now accumulated 209 runs in five matches against Pakistan, maintains an astonishing average of 69.66.

"India were under a lot of pressure. He played patiently and hit proper cricketing shots. He hit a six later but he took very few risks at the start. He knows how to play spin, plays the pull, drive, and he showed the cut shot also today. The ball went rapidly to the fence, the fielder couldn't even move. So he has learned to play every shot. He even played the scoop in this match," Kaif concluded.

Pandya's newfound maturity and leadership qualities make him an invaluable asset for the Indian cricket team, especially as they navigate high-stakes tournaments like the Asia Cup. His exceptional performance not only boosted India's opening game but also demonstrated the kind of versatile and reliable batsman he has become.
