The ground staff at R.Premadasa Stadium, Colombo had their work cut out after a heavy downpour interrupted India versus Pakistan Asia Cup 2023 Super Fours match on September 10. After the rain stopped, they faced a tough challenge to dry a few wet patches on the ground. A unique piece of equipment was on display to tackle with the wet patches. The cart featured three fans and a long wire to connect it to an electricity source outside the ground.
Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin posted the photo of the equipment on his social media account with captain, “Innovation. Ground staff doing the most thankless job.”
The on-field umpires revealed that there are two major wet patches at square leg and point region. They were looking forward to a 9 PM IST start but rain played spoilsport again to cause a further delay.
The cut-off time for a 20 overs per side game is 10:36 PM IST but rain interrupted the preparations and the play was called off. The play will resume on the reserve day right where it was interrupted. However, the weather forecast for September 11 does not look promising either and rain may lead to a shortened game or both teams sharing one point each.
Before rain played spoilsport, India were 147/2 from 24.1 overs with Virat Kohli and KL Rahul in the middle. Earlier, Pakistan skipper Babar Azam won the toss and opted to field first. Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill got India off to a good start and scored their respective half-centuries before losing their wickets.
