Team India middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer will miss the 2023 Asia Cup Super 4s match against defending champions Sri Lanka on September 12 (Tuesday). The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) provided an update on Iyer's fitness and said that the stylish batter remains under the supervision of the medical team and didn't travel with the team to the stadium.
"Shreyas Iyer is feeling better but is yet to fully recover from back spasms. He has been adviced rest by the BCCI Medical Team and has not travelled with the team to the stadium today for India's Super 4 match against Sri Lanka," BCCI said in a tweet on X (formerly known as Twitter).
It is important to note that Iyer was ruled out of the match against Pakistan just minutes before the toss as he complained of some pain in his back. The good news is that the Mumbaikar is feeling better and has been rested for the game against Sri Lanka. It will give Iyer additional time to regain full fitness and make a case for his place in the playing XI.
KL Rahul replaced Iyer for the match against the Men in Green and the former made a resounding comeback to the Indian side after a lengthy break due to injury. Rahul registered his sixth ODI ton in the game against Pakistan and stitched a historic 233-run partnership with Virat Kohli. In the end, Rahul remained unbeaten on 111 runs off 106 balls with the help of 12 fours and two sixes.
With Rahul playing a sublime innings and Ishan in top form, it would be interesting to see if Iyer's makes his way to the playing XI directly after recovering from his back spasms. With ODI World Cup less than a month away, India would want all the players to be fit, ready and in top form for the quadrennial competition. Iyer has become an important cog in India's batting line-up and provides the much-needed stability at No.4.
