India's opening batter Shubman Gill played an outstanding knock against Bangladesh and registered his 5th ODI century in 2023. Yet, his exploits at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on September 15 (Friday) went in vain as he failed to take India to the promised land. Despite Gill's impressive innings of 121 runs off 133 that was lashed with eight fours and five sixes, the Men in Blue lost the last match of Asia Cup Super 4s by six runs.
At one point in time, Gill looked well on track to lead India to a fantastic victory. Just when the stylish batter was looking to keep the required rate in check, he mistimed a loopy delivery from Mahedi Hasan and handed an easy catch to long off.
The young Indian batter was gutted and disappointed as he lost his wicket at the wrong time and admitted that he should done a better calculation.
"When I got out actually .... something you miscalculated and I think this there was a miscalculation from my side. If I had batted a bit normally and not that aggressively I think we should have been able to get over the line. But these are the learning for us. Sometimes you misunderstood the situation and I did the same ....I have to learn from this. This wasn't final for us and we have to learn from this," Gill said in the post-match press conference.
After Gill's dismissal, India were still in the hunt to complete the run chase with Axar Patel fighting at one end. The left-handed batter scored 42 runs off 34 balls with the help of three fours and two sixes but he too lost his wicket at the wrong time.
Gill's knock of the lone shinning light for the Men in Blue during their run chase against Bangladesh as master of run chases, Virat Kohli watched the match from the sidelines after being rested for the dead rubber contest.
Rohit Sharma's brigade will now square off against defending champions Sri Lanka in the final on September 17 (Sunday).
