Virat Kohli-starrer Team India put up a dominant show on Day 4 of the ongoing fourth Test at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday (March 12). Riding on Kohli's spectacular 186 India posted a colossal total of 571 after the close of Day 4 and took an edge in the all-important clash which will decide their World Test Championship (WTC) 2021-2023 final destiny.
But Australia suffered a blow before the start of their second innings as their star batter Usman Khawaja, who struck a robust 180 to help the visitors post a big first innings' total of 480, didn't turn out out to bat on Day 4.
Khawaja picked up an injury while trying to stop an Axar Patel six during India's batting on Day 4. Khawaja has left the field with a suspected left knee injury. The opening batter collided awkwardly with the advertisement signage on the outside of the boundary rope after attempting a catch on the boundary line. Australia instead sent their star spinner Matthew Kuhnemann along with Travis Head to play five overs of play.
It will be interesting to see whether Khawaja will come out to play on Day 6 or not as Australia are trailing by 88 runs with Head (3 off 18) and Kuhnemann (0 off 18) still intact on the crease.
Day 4 of the Ahmedabad Test belonged to Kohli as the star batter took his time to score his 28th Test century, and his 75th international ton. India finished on 571/9. With the injury to Shreyas Iyer, the Baggy Greens were given a lead of 91 runs. Meanwhile, the visitors sprung a surprise when opener Head accompanied by night watchman Kuhnemann was sent to open the batting! The duo went on to score 3 for no loss in six overs for their side at stumps.
It is imperative for India to win the fourth Test in order to make it to the World Test Championship final which will be held at the Oval from June 7. Meanwhile, Australia have already booked their ticket to WTC final after thrashing India by nine wickets in the third Test in Indore.
