In what came as a troubling news for Team India, star middle order batter Shreyas Iyer was on March 12 (Sunday) taken for scans in the middle of the ongoing fourth Test match against Australia after the Mumbai batter complained of lower back pain. Iyer, who usually bats at the No.5 position, didn't come out to bat on Day 3 after the dismissal of Shubman Gill. Instead, it was all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja who walked out to bat at No.5.
At the time it appeared as a Team strategy to maintain a left-hand-right-hand combination in the middle. But in the opening session of Day 4, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed Iyer's trouble with the lower back.
"Shreyas Iyer complained of pain in his lower back following the third day's play. He has gone for scans and the BCCI Medical Team is monitoring him," the Indian cricket board said in a release .
It is important to note that the stylish right-handed batter recently made a comeback to the Indian side after missing the New Zealand white-ball series and the opening Test of the Border-Gavaskar series. The Mumbaikar sustained a back injury and headed to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru to start the recovery process. After completing the rehabilitation process, Iyer returned for the second Test match against Australia in Delhi.
The stylish batter has so far failed to make an impact and tallied just 42 runs in four innings against the Baggy Greens. It would now be interesting to see the severity of Iyer's back pain and whether he will be able to take any further part in the Ahmedabad test or not.
