Bangladesh have appointed the star batter Litton Das as their new captain for the three-match ODI series against India after regular skipper Tamim Iqbal's injury rued him out of the outing which starts from December 4, Bangladesh Cricket Board's chairman of cricket operations, Jalal Yunus confirmed the development.
Das has led Bangladesh only one before in a T20I game against New Zealand when Mahmadullah got injured. However, he has been a part of the leadership group for quiet sometime now and was also appointed vice-captain of the Test when Shakib Al Hasan took over the duties.
Bangladesh are already without the services of Taskin Ahmed for the first ODI, and after having their skipper ruled out, the Bangla Tigers will be led by the promising Litton Das.
"Litton is one of the more experienced players in the side and has demonstrated leadership qualities. He has a sharp cricketing mind and reads the game well," said Jalal in a statement.
"It is most unfortunate to lose Tamim to injury for this very important series, especially because under his captaincy the team has played some outstanding cricket in the last couple of years and he has been our most prolific batsman in this format," he added.
Meanwhile, Tamim Iqbal, who is Bangladesh's highest run-scorer in ODIs, suffered a groin strain in training on Wednesday.
National Team physio Islam Khan said: "Tamim has a grade 1 strain on the right groin which has been confirmed following an MRI. We will maintain a conservative treatment protocol for him for two weeks after which his rehab will begin. Unfortunately, this means he will not be available for the ODI series and is also doubtful for the Test series." Meanwhile, fast bowler Taskin Ahmed is recovering from discogenic back pain and according to the physio, will be rested for the first ODI. The National Selection Panel has included left-arm pacer Shoriful Islam in the side as cover for Taskin.
