It was raining sixes at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) as Hobart Hurricanes registered their first win of the season. The match number eight of the Big Bash League (BBL) saw Hobart vanquish Sydney Sixers by 44-runs in a match curtailed by rain. Hobart skipper Matthew Wade’s stupendous batting earned him the man of the match award. Wade scored 93 off 46 deliveries.
The encounter played at the SCG was attended by 48,000 fans. Wade opted to bat first after winning the toss. The wicket-keeper batsman was in superb form as his innings was consisted of 9 fours and 5 sixes. Other opening batsman, D’Arcy Short on the other hand, played a crucial knock of 73 not out. The opening pair put together a partnership of 111 runs.
In the second over of the match, Wade hit 5 boundaries as the T20 World Cup-winning keeper fired on all cylinders. Caleb Jewell joined Short after Wade’s dismissal. Jewel scored 43 off 23 deliveries to take his side to a total of 213/2.
The match was eventually curtailed to 18 overs as rain interrupted the play at the SCG. Chasing 214, defending champions Sixers got off to a great start after Josh Philippe (72) and James Vince (26) put up an opening stand of 61 runs. After Vince’s dismissal, Philippe continued to fight alone. His innings consisted of six fours and three sixes.
After Philippe’s departure the asking rate kept on climbing and Sixers seemed totally clueless in front of the ruthless bowling attack of Joel Paris and Tim David. The amended total of 196, at the end, proved too much for the home side as Hobart registered their first win of the season.
Hobart will face Perth Scorchers in their next fixture at the Bellerive Oval on Tuesday (December 14) while Sydney takes on Melbourne Stars at the MCG on Wednesday (December 15).
