In a rather amusing incident during the 2023-24 Big Bash League (BBL) match between Melbourne Stars and Sydney Thunder, Haris Rauf, the fast bowler for Melbourne Stars, walked out to bat in an unexpected manner. The match took place at the Lavington Sports Oval in Albury, witnessing a unique moment that left everyone, including Rauf, amused.
During the final moments of the Stars' innings, Rauf emerged to bat without his usual protective gear - no pads, gloves, or helmet. This unusual sight occurred after Mark Steketee was run out at the non-striker’s end in the penultimate ball of the innings. Given that Rauf was unlikely to face a ball unless Daniel Sams, the bowler, delivered a no-ball or wide, his decision to forgo protective gear seemed logical at the moment.
Later, Rauf chose to don his gloves and helmet, but he still opted against wearing pads, presuming that Sams would bowl a legal delivery. His assumption proved correct as Sams went on to dismiss Liam Dawson, rendering Rauf's batting turn unnecessary.

In the game, Melbourne Stars, after choosing to bat first, posted a total of 172 runs in their allotted 20 overs. Beau Webster emerged as the key player for the Stars, contributing a significant 59 runs off 44 balls, including two fours and two sixes. Hilton Cartwright added a burst of energy with a rapid 22 off 11 balls, although his stint was cut short by Zaman Khan. Other useful contributions came from opener Thomas Rogers and captain Glenn Maxwell, who scored 21 and 30 runs, respectively.
Rauf, known for his impactful bowling, had faced some challenges in the World Cup 2023, as Pakistan did not advance to the semi-finals. His decision to withdraw from the Test series against Australia led to criticism from Wahab Riaz, the chief selector of Pakistan's men's team.
Rauf's association with Melbourne Stars dates back to the 2019-20 BBL season, where he made a remarkable debut. He has since been a vital part of the team, highlighted by achievements such as a hat-trick and a five-wicket haul.
This incident in the BBL match added a humorous element to the game and showcased Rauf's adaptability in an unpredictable situation, further endearing him to cricket fans.
