CWG 2022: After maiden medal in first Commonwealth Games, Bindyarani Devi sets sights on biggest challenge — Olympics

Winning a competitive medal at a multi-sporting international event is no easy feat. But on Sunday (July 31) morning, Bindyarani Devi joined the history books after securing India — and weightlifting's — fourth medal of the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022 in Birmingham.

After her event, the 23-year-old from Manipur caught up with Sports Tak for an exclusive interview to share her delight at winning a medal at the games. "I feel very happy to have won the silver medal in my first Commonwealth Games... The coaches and SAI were very helpful. my coach Vijay (Sharma) sir and Pramod (Sharma) sir also helped a lot. They helped me with a technique of mine that has a little problem, they gave me a lot of advice that I kept in my mind."

Bindyarani Devi lifted 202 kg, with 86 kg in the snatch round while registering a Commonwealth Games record lift of 116 kg in the clean and jerk round. Sharing her thoughts on improving her snatch, she said, "My Clean and Jerk is much better than the Snatch but I have improved in the latter as well. Right now, in Birmingham, it is going well. It is much better than before."

And having secured a medal in her first CWG event, she has set his aims high, with the 2024 Paris Olympics in her sights. "There are many competitions still left — the championships, national games, Asian Games. And the biggest games are the Olympics and that is my focus."

She also shared important pointers for young sports fans and budding weightlifters to follow, “For me, eating regular meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) is very important. Even if I do not eat for one day, I think to myself, 'how will I train today? Rest is important as well. Even if I get 10 minutes of rest I try to enjoy it silently.”
