Sanket Sargar won India's first medal in the 2022 edition of Commonwealth Games. Sargar showed immense levels of courage as he went for his last attempt despite injuring his elbow.

“I got a problem towards the end because the load shifted on my injured shoulder. I am disappointed right now. Though achieving the medal for the country is a good feeling but still but still the disappointment weighs heavy on me,” CWG silver-medallist in 55 kg category, Sargar told India Today after getting patched up.

Sargar explained what went wrong in the second clean and jerk attempt which prevented him from winning the gold medal.

“In the second attempt in the jerk, weight shifted on my right side and suddenly a crack sound came in my elbow and my hand wasn’t moving,” the 20-year-old said.

Sargar also said what the doctor had said after he failed his third attempt and settled for silver.

“The doctor said that the gap increased near the elbow. Now I have to go for the X-ray and get treated properly,” the youngster said.

The weightlifter with never back down attitude from Sangli, Maharashtra, dedicated the silver medal to the armed forces.

“I want to dedicate this medal to all the freedom fighters and all the people who sacrificed their lives for the country,” an ecstatic Sargar said.

Sargar's next aim is to win a medal at the Paris Olympics in 2024. However, his first concern is to recover from the injury sustained in Birmingham.

“First of all, my injury needs to be paid attention to, let’s see how much time it takes to get healed. Once this is recovered, then only I’ll look for future targets,” he concluded.

India bagged three medals on July 30. After Sargar, Gururaja Poojary won the bronze medal in 61kg category. India’s star weightlifter Mirabai Chanu lived up to the expectations and won the gold medal with ease.
