In a lovely return to form, Indian Test opener Cheteshwar Pujara scored a brilliant double century for Sussex against Durham to break a 100-year-old record held by the Maharaja of Nawanagar, Ranjitsinhji to become the first Indian-born cricketer to score 15 double-tons in First-Class cricket.
The 34-year-old opener was at his possible best, hitting a brilliant 203 runs off 334 balls at a strike rate of 60.77 for his team. His contribution helped Sussex to a competitive total of 538 runs in the first innings while chasing 223 runs. He also hit a double century in his first match for Sussex against Derbyshire.
The last Indian-born to achieve this feat was Kumar Shri Ranjitsinhji, who is considered by many as the best cricketer ever. It is also worth noting that Ranji also played for Sussex.
Pujara's first 200 came during the 2008-09 season while playing for Saurashtra against Orissa. He has hit 13 First Class centuries for Saurashtra, India A, India Blue and the Indian national team. His two centuries in the County Championship Division Two have ensured that Pujara will remain in history books for years to come.
