Veteran pacer James Anderson dismissed Shubman Gill once again during the second Test between India and England in Vizag on February 2. Despite facing scrutiny due to a recent poor run, Gill played aggressively during the morning session of Day 1, hitting five boundaries on his way to a 34-run knock.
However, the 24-year-old Gill's aggressive display was halted by the 41-year-old Anderson, playing his 184th Test match. With a disciplined bowling performance, Anderson managed to dismiss Gill caught behind, just as the batter seemed to be settling in. The right-handed batter Gill became Anderson's 691st Test wicket.
This marked the fifth occasion where Anderson dismissed Gill in just seven innings. The batter's record against the pacer isn't impressive, averaging just 7.80 with a total of 39 runs scored.
Gill approached his innings differently this time, displaying a proactive intent. He managed to hit off-spinners for boundaries and was also keen on adopting an aggressive approach against Anderson. The seasoned pacer strategically bowled wicket-to-wicket deliveries to set up Gill before slipping in a delivery wider off the fifth stump, leading to Gill edging the ball into the hands of wicketkeeper Ben Foakes.
Young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal showcased a stellar unbeaten innings of 179 runs as India reached 336 for six at stumps on the first day of the second Test against England.
The 22-year-old Jaiswal, who had scored 80 runs in the opening match in Hyderabad, struck his second century in just six Tests. He hit 17 fours and five sixes during his knock, which came off 257 balls.
Jaiswal shared a 90-run partnership with Shreyas Iyer, who contributed 27 runs. Debutant Rajat Patidar added 32 runs to the total.
At the close of play, R Ashwin was accompanying Jaiswal with five runs.
Earlier, Indian captain Rohit Sharma failed to capitalise on the favourable pitch conditions in Vizag, mustering only 14 runs from 41 balls during his short stay in the middle. He was dismissed by debutant Shoaib Bashir.
