Pietersen thanked Gill for proving him right.

In a remarkable turnaround on the third day of the second Test in Visakhapatnam, Shubman Gill struck a magnificent century, signaling a return to form and playing a pivotal role in stabilising India's innings. This century marked a significant milestone for Gill, being his first since his last ton in Ahmedabad in 2023 and his inaugural hundred batting at the No. 3 spot in Test cricket. Before this innings, Gill had faced challenges at this position, failing to secure a half-century in his previous 11 innings at No. 3.

Gill's journey to the century was fraught with challenges, including narrowly escaping two LBW dismissals early in the morning, courtesy of successful DRS reviews, and a risky edge that just evaded Joe Root at first slip. These moments proved to be turning points, as Gill subsequently shifted gears, particularly taking on the spinners who had troubled him in the series opener.

His performance received high praise from former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen, who took to social media to laud Gill's century.

Pietersen's acknowledgment was notable given his earlier critiques of Gill's approach during the Hyderabad Test, where he had expressed disappointment.

"The average is not looking healthy and those numbers are a sight for sore eyes. You don't want to look at them. But there is a reason why he is batting at No.3 it's because of the kind of player that he is and what he can do. So I am not too bothered about two dismissals. What I would be bothered about is his performances in the second and third Test matches," Pietersen had said.

"I don't think you can get rid of somebody as quickly as one Test match. He will definitely play in Vizag and let's have a look and see how he prepares for the next Test. Let's not cast Shubman Gill aside and say he can't play. He can play. When you talk about feelings, he give me the feeling of sheer joy and delight when he walks out to bat. I want to watch him bat," Pietersen had argued.

However, Pietersen adjusted his stance post-Hyderabad, advocating for patience with Gill and suggesting his potential to shine in Visakhapatnam, drawing comparisons to the legendary Jacques Kallis.

"Kallis averaged 22 in his first 10 Tests and turned out to be arguably the greatest player to play the game. Give @ShubmanGill time to find it please. He’s a serious player!" Pietersen had tweeted.

Gill's century was a masterclass in resilience and skill, comprising 11 fours and two sixes, culminating in 104 runs from 147 balls. His innings was instrumental in lifting India from a precarious position after the loss of two early wickets, contributing significantly to India's commanding lead of 370 runs by the Tea break on Day 3. This performance not only showcased Gill's talent and mental fortitude but also underscored the importance of backing young players through their form fluctuations.
