Former South Africa captain and legendary batter, AB de Villiers has named his pick when it comes to the batter who has a genuine shot at finishing as the leading run-scorer in the 2023 ODI World Cup. The former Royal Challenger Bangalore (RCB) superstar named India's young sensation Shubman Gill to score more runs than any other batter in the upcoming quadrennial competition, scheduled to be played in India.
The Proteas legend further delved into Gill's technique and underlined that just at the age of 24, the young Indian opener has become one of the best batters in the world.
"His technique and style is quite simple and basic generally what you say about some of the best players in the world," De Villiers said on his YouTube channel.
"You get some exception like Steve smith, who has got a very different technique, he jumps across the crease, gets down the wicket or out of the crease in the line of the bowlers' channels specifically in the Test cricket but he also dies in the ODIs.
"Whereas Shubman Gill is a much more traditional, very straightforward technique. He doesn’t try a lot of different things. He does have a lot of strength where he can change the gears and put a lot of pressure on the bowlers.
"In the IPL we saw that front arm pull off relatively full length which wasn’t even short. He has got this incredible ability to picking up the length very quickly. You generally see that with some of the best players in the world and Shubman is very quickly becoming one of them.
"He is still young, which is incredible because he looks like an experienced campaigner already. We are going to hear a lot about him in the future and in this World Cup as I think he is going to be the top run scorer," he added.
Gill has been piling runs at a frantic pace. The stylish right-handed batter scored a fantastic century in Indore against Australia after stroking an elegant half-century in Mohali. The right-handed batter has been in sensational form in 2023, scoring more than 1,200 ODI runs in 20 innings, including five tons and a double century.
