India's very own Hitman, Rohit Sharma shattered yet another record with his batting blitzkrieg in the ODI World Cup semifinal clash against New Zealand at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai on November 15, Wednesday. Men in Blue's skipper scripted history as he busted Chris Gayle's all-time record of hitting most sixes in the ICC ODI World Cup. Gayle has 49 sixes against his name but Rohit went two steps ahead of him and has so far cracked 51 sixes.
Not just this, Rohit also went on to record another big milestone. He went past Gayle to whack most sixes in a single World Cup edition. The 36-year-old has so far smashed 28 maximums in the ongoing World Cup while Gayle smoked 26 sixes in the 2015 edition.
Most sixes in a single World Cup edition
28* - Rohit Sharma (2023)
26 - Chris Gayle (2015)
22 - Eoin Morgan (2019)
22 - Glenn Maxwell (2023)
21 - AB de Villiers (2015)
21 - Quinton de Kock (2023)
Rohit played a fiery knock of 47 which came off in 29 balls riding on four sixes and as many maximums before perishing to Tim Southee in the ninth over to leave India 71/1.
Meanwhile, Rohit won the toss and elected to bat first in the crunch World Cup semifinal against New Zealand.
After winning the toss, Rohit said,"We are gonna bat first. Looks like a good pitch. Looks like on the slower side. Whatever we do, we need to do well. I think it was back in 2019 when we played the semis. NZ is one of the most consistent sides. Very important day. Constantly, talking about how important it is about turning up on that day. It is about controlling the controllables. Same team."
Meanwhile, Kiwi skipper Kane Williamson said,"We would have batted first. Looks like a used pitch. We would want to do well with the ball and then hopefully, some dew later. Amazing occasion. Four years ago, similar situation but a different location. They have been playing some good cricket. Always a building phase between the tournaments. Need to assess what is in front of you when the tournament starts. We are going with the same team from the previous match."
