India thrashed Sri Lanka by 302 runs in their World Cup clash at Wankhede stadium in Mumbai on November 2, Thursday. This massive win catapulted Rohit sharma's India to top of the World Cup's points table. India, who recorded their seventh straight victory in the ongoing World Cup 2023, now have 14 points in a total of seven matches with a stunning Net Run Rate of +2.102. During the process, India dethroned South Africa from the summit of the points table as the Proteas are now placed second with 12 points in seven World Cup matches and an NRR of +2.290.
But India's triumph over Sri Lanka came as a blessing in disguise for Pakistan, who are sitting at no.5 with just six points, courtesy to three wins in seven games. Pakistan started their campaign on a resounding note with two straight victories. But little did they know what's in store for them as they went on to lose back-to-back four defeats in the World Cup 2023. But they heaved a sigh in relief when they finally returned to winning ways after beating Bangladesh in their previous match.
Had Sri Lanka won the match against India, they would have garnered six points to go level with Pakistan to further jeopardise Babar Azam's team's hopes for semifinals. But since they lost the match, Sri Lanka are reeling at seventh place with just four points. On the other hands, with two more matches in their hand Pakistan still have the chance to make it to the semis mathematically. Pakistan will now face New Zealand on November 4 and then lock horns with England on November 11.
Meanwhile, New Zealand's NRR took a major hit after mauling against Temba Bavuma's men on Wednesday. New Zealand slumped to no.4 with four wins in seven ties with an NRR +0.484 behind Australia, who are sitting on no.3 in the points table.
This is how the World Cup's points table looks like after India vs Sri Lanka clash:

1. India | 7 | 7 | 0 | 14 | +2.102 |

Two wins for India in the last two matches will ensure their top spot in the points table. On the other hand, two defeats will mean that they will finish as no.2 behind the South Africa provided Temba's brigade emerge victorious in their last league match.
Rohit's men can also finish third in the points table if they succumbs in their remaining two matches and Australia go on to win their rest of the three ties.
