Australia got off to a flyer in the run chase of 241 against India in the ICC Men's ODI World Cup 2023 final at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Despite David Warner’s wicket off the first ball bowled by Mohammed Shami, opener Travis Head, and Mitchell Marsh tried to take on the Indian bowlers to make use of fielding restrictions. Marsh struggled but pounced on deliveries where he believed he could find boundaries. Jasprit Bumrah ended Marsh’s stay at the crease but Marsh’s reaction to the wicket has gone viral on social media.

In the fifth over of the run chase, Bumrah made up for the expensive first over. After two dot deliveries, he bowled one outside the off stump from a wide angle. Marsh slashed his bat on the delivery and all he could manage was an edge that was caught by wicketkeeper KL Rahul. While walking back to the dressing room, Marsh winked at one of the Indian fielders.
He contributed with a run-a-ball 15. He got off the mark with a boundary against Shami in the second over. In Shami's next over, he hit a massive six to put pressure on India's new-ball bowlers.
Earlier, Marsh contributed with the ball in the middle overs. With Josh Inglis standing up, Marsh kept Indian batters quiet conceding just five runs from two overs.
Despite the first over of the innings, Bumrah was economical in the first powerplay overs. He bowled two maiden overs and took the wicket of Steve Smith as well. Smith got out lbw in the seventh over of the innings. He was trapped in front of the stumps. However, Smith would have been given not out had he used DRS to overturn Richard Kettleborough’s decision. Later, Bumrah would have got Marnus Labuschagne's wicket with a yorker but the umpire's call saved him.
Bumrah conceded just 21 runs from the first five overs he bowled. He bowled two maiden overs as well. With the bat, Bumrah could score just a single as he got out lbw to leg-spinner Adam Zampa.
