Leading up to this game, Shami had been relegated to the sidelines, largely due to Shardul Thakur's presence in the squad. However, with his exemplary performance against New Zealand, Shami undoubtedly presented the team's management with selection dilemmas. The void created by Hardik Pandya's absence from the team lineup had opened a door for Shami. The skepticism around Thakur as the fifth bowler, especially given his recent form and tendency to concede runs, further propelled Shami's inclusion.
