Former England fast bowler Steve Harmison recently expressed his views on the potential semi-final matchups in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023, highlighting New Zealand as a formidable opponent that India might prefer to avoid. India, having already secured their semi-final berth, is preparing for their final group-stage game against the Netherlands at Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Stadium on November 12.

In his conversation with ESPNcricinfo, Harmison emphasised New Zealand's strength and resilience, acknowledging their reputation for being a team of character and quality. New Zealand's performance in the group stages has been impressive, as they are on the verge of confirming their semi-final spot with 10 points from nine matches.

"A quality side like New Zealand, you can never write them off. Out of the three teams that are in the semi-finals with India, I've got a funny feeling that they are the one team that India wouldn't want to play because they have character. They are all coming back to fitness," said Harmison.

Harmison pointed out that New Zealand's cricket team, known for its consistency and fighting spirit, could pose a significant challenge for India in the semi-finals. India has been the first team to advance to the semi-finals, leading the points table.

"I wouldn't say they are all in prime form. But on the big stage, India and New Zealand have been here before. All the pressure is now on India. Indian cricketers are used to playing under pressure so I don't think that will harm them too much. If India had one side they didn't want to play in the semi-final, it would be New Zealand," Harmison added.

Alongside India, both Australia and South Africa have also cemented their places in the semi-finals. Meanwhile, the race for the last semi-final spot is still open, with New Zealand currently ahead of Pakistan and Afghanistan in terms of points. New Zealand has a slight edge with 10 points, while both Pakistan and Afghanistan, with one remaining game each, follow closely behind.

As the World Cup progresses, the anticipation around the semi-final fixtures grows, with New Zealand's potential face-off against India being a particularly intriguing prospect, given the strengths and track records of both teams.
