India is poised to take on Pakistan in the highlight match of the 2023 ODI World Cup on October 14, Saturday. The encounter will unfold at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, with both teams keen to maintain their tournament momentum.
Indian batter KL Rahul is anticipated to play a pivotal role, especially after his scintillating unbeaten 97 against Australia in Chennai. Although he didn't bat against Afghanistan, Rahul's form will be instrumental for India in Ahmedabad. Ever since his stellar return against Pakistan in the Asia Cup, Rahul has been in sublime touch. Post his comeback ton, he's notched up three half-centuries against Australia, two in the bilateral series and the third (97*) in the World Cup.
Discussing Rahul's prowess, Pathan labelled him as pure class and expressed admiration for his evolved game.
"I don't refer to KL Rahul by his name. I term him 'the class'. That's how I see him. It feels like we're witnessing KL Rahul 2.0 since his Asia Cup return, particularly that century against Pakistan, a match he wasn't even slated to play," Irfan Pathan commented on Star Sports.
Pathan continued, "That match, I believe, taught him that over-preparation isn't always beneficial. He mentioned this during our post-match interview. The fitness challenges and the subsequent reflection period seem to have honed him further. Presently, he seems to be in a mindset of embracing the present and truly enjoying his game. That's the KL Rahul we're witnessing now," as Pathan lavished praise.
Rahul's innings against Australia was particularly commendable, given India's precarious position at 3 wickets down in the initial 2 overs. In partnership with Virat Kohli, Rahul added a crucial 165 runs, pulling India out of a tight spot.
Reflecting on the India vs Australia game, Pathan observed, "He displayed a willingness to shoulder the pressure. Against Australia, he seemed to advise Virat Kohli to adopt a Test match approach, to be patient and weather the storm, especially since they were three down without much on the board."
Pathan concluded, "His adaptability is commendable. Initially an opener, now he's delivering in the middle order, adept against both spin and pace. He's a linchpin for the team, especially vital in the middle order."
