Virat Kohli couldn't equal Sachin Tendulkar's World Record but joined him in elite club with another big milestone

Virat Kohli returned to pavilion after scoring 88 runs in the World Cup clash against Sri Lanka.

The stage was set for Virat Kohli's much-awaited 49th ODI century in India's World Cup clash against Sri Lanka at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai on November 2, Thursday. But just when Kohli was just 12 runs short of stepping on that mega milestone, Dilshan Madushanka removed him at the score of 88 off 94. However, Kohli might have fallen short of emulating Tendulkar's big record of 49 ODI tons, but he went on to join the Master Blaster in another prestigious feat.

Kohli, became just the second batter to amass 4000 international runs against Sri Lanka.

Notably, the legendary Tendulkar has been the leading run-scorer against Sri Lanka, with an impressive tally of 5108 runs in 109 matches, boasting an average of 49.11. His record comprises 17 centuries and 23 half-centuries. 

 

Kohli is also fourth in the list of most runs by an Indian batsman against an opposition. While Tendulkar's prowess against Australia is unparalleled with 6707 runs from 110 matches, Kohli isn't far behind, accumulating 5149 runs in 95 encounters against the Aussies.

 

After the early dismissal of Rohit Sharma, thanks to a stellar delivery from Dilshan Madushanka, it was Kohli who, in alongwith Shubman Gill steered the Indian boat. Kohli's 50 came from just 50 deliveries, highlighting his sublime form, after recording a duck against England in India's previous game.

 

Kohli also entered an elite list of batters with 1000 ODI runs in 2023. Alongside him in this club are names like Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma, and Pathum Nissanka. Starting the game with just 34 runs short of the mark, Kohli effortlessly achieved this milestone.

Not one to stop breaking records, Kohli has now eclipsed Tendulkar's record for the most 1000-run years in ODIs. This achievement against Sri Lanka marked the eighth time in Kohli's illustrious career where he has crossed the 1000-run mark in a single year of ODIs.
