Virat Kohli scored 88 runs from 94 balls against Sri Lanka.

Virat Kohli created a few records during his 88-run knock.

Virat Kohli had a nervy start to his innings as he had to walk out to bat early at the Wankhede Stadium after Rohit Sharma was dismissed in the first over itself. While Kohli was starting to settle, Angelo Mathews was introduced into the attack. The lack of pace caused problems for Kohli in the 10th over when he tried to play square of the wicket with an angled bat but played it early and managed an inside edge towards mid-wicket for a single. As Kohli jogged to the non-striker’s end, he hit Mathews playfully on the hips.

Earlier, Kohli was dropped by Dushmantha Chameera off his own bowling in the sixth over. He was batting on 10 from 16 balls.

Kohli got to his half-century from 50 balls in the 17th over of the innings. Struggling in Mumbai weather, he surpassed Kumar Sangakkara on the list of most fifty-plus scores in World Cups. He became the first batter to score 1,000 ODI runs or more in eight years, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar.

Kohli also became the second batter to score 4,000 or more runs against Sri Lanka across formats (T20Is, ODIs, and Tests).

Kohli and Shubman Gill shared an 189-run stand for the second wicket. This is the joint second-highest partnership for India against Sri Lanka in World Cups. KL Rahul and Rohit shared an 189-run stand against Sri Lanka at Headingley, Leeds in the 2019 World Cup.

Kohli also equalled Sangakkara on the list of most fifty-plus scores in ODIs. He has 118 such scores, only behind Tendulkar's 145.

In the 32nd over, Kohli was dismissed by Dilshan Madushanka. He scored 88 runs from 94 balls featuring 11 fours. He missed equaling Tendulkar’s record for most centuries in ODIs.

However, Kohli became India’s leading run-scorer in World Cup 2023. He is only behind South African opener Quinton de Kock who has hit four centuries in the tournament so far.
