India demolished Sri Lanka in the ODI World Cup 2023 fixture in Wankhede on Thursday, November 2, bowling them out for just 55 runs after scoring 357/8 in the first innings.
Pacers Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, and Jasprit Bumrah were on fire, reducing Sri Lanka to 14/6 in just 10 overs. Mohammed Shami was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 5-1-18-5, while Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah shared four wickets between them.
India batter Shreyas Iyer praised the bowling attack after the match, saying that he was lucky not to have to face them in the game.
Yeah, looking at today's bowling and the previous game, definitely, we are lucky not to play against them. But at the same time, we batted them in the nets. So, it gives us an added motivation to come and play any sort of bowlers," Iyer said at the post-match press conference.
India have bowled well against Sri Lanka in the recent past. In the Asia Cup 2023 Final, India had bowled out Sri Lanka for just 50 runs and then chased down the target with 10 wickets remaining.
Asked which performance against Sri Lanka was better, Iyer said that the World Cup game felt surreal.
"I think it's hard to say because I was sitting out in the Asia Cup final," he said. "But from the field, today's performance was surreal, especially by the bowlers. The way they stood up to the occasion was amazing. And once we got those two-three wickets, we just capitalized on that. As a bowling unit and fielding unit, we supported our bowlers by taking a few catches here and there. So yeah, as I mentioned earlier, the team is in a great space of mind."
