New Zealand's star batter Rachin Ravindra showcased exceptional form in the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023, securing his third century against Pakistan at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Saturday, November 4.
The young Ravindra achieved several milestones on the way to his century. He became only the third Black Caps batter to score 500 or more runs in a single edition of the World Cup. Previously, Kane Williamson scored 578 runs from 10 matches in 2019, while Martin Guptill reached 547 runs from nine matches in the 2015 World Cup.
Now, Ravindra also holds the record for the most centuries by a Kiwi batter in a single World Cup edition. Before, Glenn Turner (1975), Martin Guptill (2015), and Kane Williamson (2019) each scored two centuries.
Furthermore, he also holds the record for the most centuries by a New Zealand batter in a single 50-over World Cup. Previously, Nathan Astle, Stephen Fleming, Martin Guptill, Scott Styris, Glenn Turner, and Kane Williamson had each scored two centuries.
During the recent match against Pakistan, New Zealand's innings were powered by Ravindra's solid partnership with Devon Conway. After Conway's dismissal, Ravindra notched up his half-century off 51 balls and continued to build an impactful partnership with Kane Williamson.
In the 34th over, Ravindra reached 99 with a four on the leg side off Mohammad Wasim Jr. Although he had a close call in the next ball after missing an off-stump delivery, Ravindra eventually secured his century off 88 balls. Undoubtedly, Ravindra's remarkable performance has distinguished him as a standout player for New Zealand in the 2023 World Cup.
His records come after captain Kane Williamson achieved a significant milestone by becoming only the third New Zealand batter to surpass 1000 runs in World Cup competitions, joining a prestigious club of cricketing legends.
Kane Williamson's exceptional performance places him in the esteemed company of Stephen Fleming and Ross Taylor, who are the other two New Zealand batsmen to have achieved similar feats. Stephen Fleming amassed a total of 1,075 runs in World Cup matches, while Ross Taylor surpassed the 1,000-run milestone with 1,002 runs.
