West Indies' horror show in World Cup Qualifiers 2023 continued as they failed to defend 375 against Netherlands at Takashinga Sports Club, Harare in World Cup Qualifiers 2023. After upsetting South Africa in T20 World Cup 2022, Netherlands stunned West Indies as the game ended in a record-breaking tie and the Dutch won in super over by 22 runs.
Super Over drama
In the super over, West Indies chose Jason Holder had ball in hand. Netherlands sent Logan van Beek to bat who did not waste a single delivery and smashed three fours, three sixes. Chasing 31, skipper Shai Hope and Johnson Charles came out to bat. It was too daunting a task for them to pull off and they managed just eight runs from five balls and lost the super over by 22 runs.
Good start
Earlier Edwards won the toss and opted to field first. Brandon King and Johnson Charles got them off to a great start with 101-run partnership. Vivian Kingma broke the partnership in the 18th over. Charles scored 54 runs from 55 deliveries including nine fours and one six. Saqib Zulfiqar got the wicket of Shamarh Brooks who got a good start but could not convert it into a big score. Brandon King could not go on to get a century as well and got out in the 29th over. King scored 76 runs from 81 balls including 13 fours.
Pooran’s fastest ODI ton
Shai Hope and Nicholas Pooran toyed with Dutch bowlers. It turned out to be a run-fest as fours and sixes came very easy once they settled. Pooran got to his half-century from just 38 balls. However, Hope missed the milestone as he got dismissed by Bas de Leede in the 41st over. In his next over, he got rid of new batter Holder as well. Pooran completed his century in the penultimate over. He got to the 100-run mark from just 63 balls, third-fastest for West Indies. Keemo Paul contributed with a 25-ball 46 cameo as West Indies posted 374/6 on the board.
Dutch’s solid reply
In the run chase of 375, Netherlands openers got off to a good start. They shared a 76-run partnership from 64 balls. Roston Chase got the wicket of both Vikramjit Singh (37) and Max ODowd (36). Wesley Barresi and Bas de Leede got off to good starts but Akeal Hosein got rid of both off them. Nidamanuru did not let run chase slip away from grasp and Edwards supported him well. Nidamanuru got to his half-century from 40 balls. Few overs later, Edwards got to his half-century from just 33 deliveries. In the final 10 overs, they needed 108 runs to win with six wickets in hand.
Nidamanuru’s ton, Van Beek’s finish
Nidamanuru got to his century with three consecutive fours in the 44th over. In the 45th over, Chase got the breakthrough with the wicket of Edwards. He got out caught and bowled. He scored 67 runs from 47 balls including six fours and one six. In 46th over, Saqib Zulfiqar got run out which was followed by the big wicket of Nidamanuru, He scored 111 runs from 76 balls including 11 fours and three sixes. The last two overs, Netherlands needed 30 runs. Van Beek went berserk and hit Chase for two fours and a six. Aryan Dutt ended the over with a boundary. In the final over nine runs were needed. Alzarri Joseph got the wicket of Dutt. Netherlands needed one run off the final ball but Van Beek played in straight to Holder as the match ended in a tie. Netherlands missed a chance to register second-highest successful ODI run chase.
