Afghanistan cricket team's qualification in the semi-finals of the ongoing edition of the T20 World Cup 2024 is no less than a fairy tale. Before the start of the mega tournament, even them reaching the Super 8 stage appeared to be far-fetched. After defeating Bangladesh at the Arnos Vale Ground in St Vincent, on June 25 (Tuesday), Rashid Khan revealed the name of the cricketing legend that believed in their team finishing in the top four and that he promised him they would make it through and prove the legendary Brian Lara right.
Rashid Khan on Brian Lara's prediction
Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan revealed that Brian Lara was the only legend who predicted their qualification to the semi-finals even before the tournament started and how he told him he would prove him right by reaching the semis. Ahead of the mega tournament, Brian Lara named India, England, Afghanistan, and West Indies as the top four. His three of four prediction came right and apart from the Windies one, as South Africa finished in the semis in their place.

“It's something like a dream for us as a team being in the semifinal. It's all about the way we have started the tournament. The belief came while we beat New Zealand. It's unbelievable, I don't have any words to describe my feelings. Back home, everyone is so happy for this big achievement. The only guy who put us in the semifinal was Brian Lara and we proved that right. Before the competition at the welcome party, I told him, 'We won't let you down. We'll make it through and prove you're right.' I am proud of this team,” said Rashid Khan in the post-match presentation.
“It's a massive celebration back home now. It's a big achievement for us. We have done that in the Under-19 level, being in the semifinal. But in this World Cup ... I don't have any words how to describe the feeling. The country will be very proud. I am so happy the way we have delivered as a team. We took the responsibility. Being in the semis is big, now we have to go with a clear mind. We'll have to keep things simple and make sure we enjoy the big occasion,” he added.
Afghanistan to face South Africa in semi-final
Afghanistan will now be preparing for their semi-final clash against South Africa. It won't be an easy game but winning it will only make their run more historic. They would be playing in the finals of an ICC tournament. The Afghan side will give everything they have in order to witness that moment.
