England's premium pacer Jofra Archer has hinted towards early retirement if his injury issues continue to hold him back for another year. Archer has shown interest in playing the upcoming edition of the T20 World Cup 2024 in front of his home and family in the West Indies but also acknowledges the fact that another 'stop-start' year may ruin this opportunity for him. His constant issues with his back and elbow have not allowed him to represent England since March 2023.
Archer on his injury setback
As per ECB, Jofra Archer is still in their current plans. He will most likely make his much-awaited comeback to international cricket during England's T20I series against Pakistan in May, before the upcoming T20 World Cup.
"Last year, I played from January to May, because I did go to the IPL as well. And then the year before that, I played maybe one or two games for Sussex, so I've had a whole year of nothing ...," Archer told 4Cast's 'The Athlete's Voice' podcast.
"Hopefully, from June 1 to when June 1 comes next year, hopefully, I've had no breaks... no injuries, and just constantly playing. It's been a while and honestly, I don't know if I've got another stop-start year in me. That's the truth, I don't know if I've got another one," he added.
Archer's plans upon not making it to the T20 World Cup
Archer is focused on making it to the squad for the Pakistan T20I series and later the T20 World Cup 2024. However, if for some reason that doesn't work out the pacer plans to stay busy and continue playing cricket.
"Worst-case scenario. I don't really want to think about this but even if I don't make it to the World Cup for whatever reason, there's still the T20 Blast, there's still the Hundred," he said.
"There's still cricket that I haven't got a chance to play in the last couple of years. So as much as I want to play in the World Cup, if it doesn't happen for whatever reason, at least I still know I could be somewhat active," he added.
