SL's chances to qualify for the Super 8 have come to an end.

SA became the first team to reach the Super 8 stage.

The clash between Wanindu Hasaranga-led Sri Lanka and Rohit Paudel's Nepal in match 23 of the ongoing edition of the T20 World Cup 2024 which was supposed to be played at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium in Florida, on June 12 got abandoned without a single ball being bowled due to heavy rain. This ended Sri Lanka's chances to qualify for the Super 8 stage as they only have one point in three matches. They lost their first two games against South Africa and Bangladesh and now the game against fellow Asian side got washed out.

This is the second time a match was abandoned in this mega tournament due to persistent rain, the first one being the clash between Scotland and England. After 10 overs into Scotland's innings, rain stopped the play and both sides had to share a point. However, the game could not even start during the game between Sri Lanka and Nepal. The match was supposed to start at 5 but rain delayed it, around 5:30 IST the rain still stopped but it was back again and this time it was heavy enough to abandon the game.

South Africa qualify for Super 8

The rain might have spoiled it for the Lankan Lions but it ensured that Aiden Markram's South Africa became the first team to reach the Super 8 stage. They already had 6 points with wins over Sri Lanka, Netherlands, and Bangladesh. Now, Bangladesh, Netherlands, and Nepal will be competing for the one last spot in the Super 8 spot that Group D can get. Bangladesh is the front runner for that position but won;t be an easy task considering the performance from the Dutch side in their previous games.
