Former West Indies superstar Sunil Narine released a statement to explain his stance on why he won't come out of retirement to participate in the 2024 T20 World Cup, slated to be played in the Caribbean and the US. Narine is currently displaying his unparalleled skillset in the Indian Premier League (IPL) while representing the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Narine has scored 286 runs in seven matches at a strike rate of 176.54.
In the statement, Narine addressed the outpour of sentiments from fans urging him to take a U-turn on retirement and represent the West Indies in the T20 World Cup. It's important to note that Narine announced his retirement in 2023.
"I hope this message finds you all well and in good health. I am truly flattered and humbled that my performances recently have moved many people to publicly express their wish for me to come out of retirement and play in the upcoming T20 World Cup," Narine said in a statement.
Why Narine won't come out of retirement?
In his statement, Narine revealed the real reason behind sticking to his retirement decision and said that players who have toiled hard in the previous months should get a chance to play in the ICC tournament.
"I have made peace with that decision and whilst I never wish to disappoint, that door is now closed and I will be supporting the guys who take the field in June for West Indies. Guys who have worked hard over the past few months and deserve to show our wonderful fans that they are capable of winning another title. I wish you all the best," said Narine.
Narine played a major role in West Indies' first T20 World Cup triumph in 2012 while he has also been pivotal in KKR winning the cash-rich tournament twice.
