England secured an important win over New Zealand in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia, but a lot of the blame will fall on the shoddy fielding of the Kiwi players at the Gabba Stadium in. In one instance, New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson courted controversy after trying to claim a dropped catch off Jos Buttler's batting but his effort to do so went in vain.
The incident took place in the sixth over of the innings, Buttler's effort left fell slightly behind Kane but the skipper did well to backtrack and dive to catch the effort, away from the eyes of the umpires and the batters, but not the cameras. Upon viewing the replays, it was quite evident that the ball had touched the grass after leaving Williamson's hands. Before this, it looked like Williamson had taken a brilliant diving catch off Mitchell Santner's bowling.
Although Buttler began his walk back to the pavilion, the umpires were not so sure about the attempts and the replays made it clear that the catch was not taken. Buttler was called back to resume his innings, and Williamson was seen apologising to Buttler for his actions.
Buttler punished the Kiwi captain for his mistake, with the England captain on just eight runs when he was dropped. He went on to score 73 in 47 balls to help England put on a competitive total of 179. He was dropped again when he scored 40 runs off Daryl Mitchell's fielding in the 13th over when Lockie Furguson was bowling.
