Former Zimbabwe captain Andy Flower has been appointed has Afghanistan cricket team’s coaching consultant for the upcoming T20 World Cup, which begins from October 17. Flower joined the Afghanistan cricket bubble ahead of his consultancy role. The former wicket-keeper batter will join South African all-rounder Lance Klusener as part of the Afghanistan coaching staff.
Flower had coached the England team from 2009 to 2014, and under his coaching the Paul Collingwood-led squad lifted the ICC T20 World Cup 2010 in the West Indies.
The 53-year-old has been a known name in the coaching world having coached in the IPL, PSL, CPL and the Hundred Ball competitions. In 2020, he was appointed as the head coach for Multan Sultans, St Lucia Zouks and as assistant coach for Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) in the IPL.
Flower played 63 Tests and 213 One Day International matches for Zimbabwe.
The Afghanistan Cricket Board (AFC) Chairman Mr. Azizullah Fazli said,
“We are delighted that Andy has joined ACB. Andy has worked with a number of our players in various franchise competitions and his vast experience will be very beneficial and useful to help the team in the World Cup,” he added.
Afghanistan is placed in Group B along with India, Pakistan and New Zealand and will open their T20 World Cup campaign on October 25.
