Former Sri Lankan captain Angelo Mathews has made himself available for selection for future international tours. An official release from the Sri Lanka Cricket Board communicated about the former captain’s intention to end the impasse when the SLC Board disclosed the new central contract structure earlier this year.
“With immediate effect, Mathews will join the squads training at the High-Performance Centre, focusing on future international tours,” an official release from the SLC Board said.
The 34-year-old had refused the sign the new central contract for their 2021-22 season over an alleged lack of transparency in the grading system and inadequate compensation. While the other players went ahead and inked the deal with the Board, the all-rounder made his decision clear and ruled himself out of the selection and it resulted in Mathews not getting considered for the while-ball series against India and the series thereafter including the upcoming T20 World Cup, which begins from October 17.
Mathews, who last played in April 2021 in the two-Test series at home against Bangladesh, if he returns to Sri Lanka fold, is likely to play the home Test series against West Indies in November, followed by the Lanka Premier League in December.
