Salaam Cricket 2021: It’s not Pakistan but India who can save Test cricket, says Shoaib Akhtar

While the cricketing world and fans are busy with the start of the T20 World Cup, former Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Akhtar is not happy with how the format has had a negative effect on the longevity of Test cricket. Ahead of the much-awaited India vs Pakistan clash on October 24, Akhtar made a big statement while speaking at Aajtak’s ‘Salaam Cricket’ conclave in Dubai saying that “ICC has finished Test cricket”.

“Today only four to five nations are playing Test cricket and among those India are at the top position. Previously, Pakistan was at the top position but now due to the T20 format, everything is spoiled. With the entry of T20 in international cricket, ICC has finished Test cricket. Only those cricket boards who have funds to host Test cricket are hosting matches, what about Pakistan and other nations,” Akhtar said.

Despite the harsh criticism, the fast bowler believes that Test cricket can still be saved and India will have a big role in it.

“It is important to save Test cricket and it is the responsibility of no other nation except India. Only the voice of some legendary cricket players and cricket board can save test cricket,“ the Rawalpindi Express opined.

ICC couldn’t save its brand

Digging deep into the effect of T20 tournaments around the world, the 46-year-old emphasised on how the shorter format has affected the future of cricket.

“In T20 tournament everyone wants that their children to earn more and grow more. But here ICC has failed to save its brand,“ said the ninth-highest Test wicket-taker for Pakistan.

India can’t take Pakistan lightly

Despite India’s 100 percent record in World Cup events and recent form in warm-up games, Akhtar feels that the Virat Kohli-led India can’t take Babar Azam’s brigade lightly.

“Pakistan has got a strong middle order and bowling line up that turn the match in their favour. So, India team can’t take Pakistan lightly,” he added.
