Shakib Al Hasan broke former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi’s record of most wickets in T20 World Cup history. Shakib took two wickets in his second over of the match against Sri Lanka to surpass Afridi. Before the match, the left-arm spinner needed one more wicket to get the record in his name.
The record-breaking wicket of Shakib was opener Pathum Nissanka. It was followed by the wicket of Avishka Fernando, who bagged a three-ball duck.
The veteran all-rounder has been in brilliant form of late taking nine wickets from previous three matches in the round 1 stage including the four-wicket haul against minnows Papua New Guinea.
The 34-year-old achieved the feat in his 29th T20 World Cup game whereas the Pakistan leg-spinner took 34 matches to take 39 wickets. Shakib is way ahead of any other bowler in the ongoing T20 World Cup. West Indies’ Dwayne Bravo is the only bowler in the race with 25 wickets from 30 games.
The southpaw is also the leading wicket-taker in the format. Last week, he surpassed former Sri Lankan bowler Lasith Malinga to get the record on his name. Trent Boult with 99 wickets and Rashid Khan with 95 wickets are the only two bowlers in the mega tournament who can come to close to his tally of 117 wickets.
