Former India captain and batting legend, Sunil Gavaskar didn't mince his words while reacting to Rohit Sharma's idea of a three-match series for the World Test Championship (WTC) final. The cricketer-turned-commentator provided a brutal assessment of India's performance in the 2023 WTC final and shot down Rohit's idea. After India lost the WTC final on June 11 (Sunday), the Indian skipper reflected on the country's defeat and floated an interesting idea pertaining to the WTC final.
"A three-match series would be nice ... you work hard for two years and then you have only one shot at it. You cannot get into that momentum that you need for Test cricket. In the next cycle...a three-match series would be ideal," Rohit said in the press conference after the match.
Gavaskar rubbished Rohit's notion and opined that when it comes to Indan Premier League (IPL) final, no one asks for a three-match series as it is a single-game winner takes all contest.
"No. This has been decided for a long time, you know even before you enter that first match of the cycle that the final is going to be just one-off. So, you have to be prepared mentally. Just like you prepare for the IPL, you don't say best of three. Everybody can have a bad day, or a couple of days, but before the first ball of the cycle you know what it is. So, you can't be asking for a best of three. Tomorrow, you may say best of five," Gavaskar said in an exclusive chat with Sports Tak.
Australia were the better team throughout the five days of the Test match as India fell behind the eight ball on the opening day of the final. From thereon, India was playing catch up but their dream of a miracle win came to an end after yet another batting collapse. Rohit & Co. were comprehensively beaten as they sustained a massive 209-run defeat in the Ultimate Test.
