India jump two places in World Test Championships Table as Australia choke Proteas at the Gabba

India have made massive gains in World Test Championships (WTC) 2021-23 table after two decisions went their way on December 18. With a 188-run win over Bangladesh in the Chattogram Test, India went past Sri Lanka to move up one place. Few hours later, they found themselves second on the points table as South Africa surrendered against hosts Australia and lost by six wickets on a green top at the Gabba, Brisbane.

India have a win percentage of 55.77 with seven wins from 13 Tests. The top spot is occupied by Pat Cummins-led Australia who have 76.92 win percentage with nine wins from 13 Tests.

While Australia are comfortable at the top spot, the race for the second is very much alive. South Africa are just behind India with 54.55 win percentage. The Proteas have won six tests out of 11 and drawn none. Sri Lanka are fourth on the table with 53.55 win percentage. Sri Lanka have won five out of 10 Tests.

India would hope that South Africa’s horrible run in Australia continues as it will help the finalists of WTC 2019-21 make it to the final again. They need three wins from four remaining Tests including a two-Test series at home against West Indies next year.

On the other hand, India will look to continue their dominance over Bangladesh in the second Test at Shere Bangla National Stadium, Dhaka starting December 12. After that, they will play a three-Test series at home against Australia next year in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Sri Lanka will face a tough challenge as they will tour New Zealand for two-Test series which they need to win in order to stay alive in the tournament. Even if they win the Test series against the BlackCaps in favourable conditions, they will be dependent on results of others.

Earlier Pakistan were knocked out of the WTC final race after a 26-run loss against Ben Stokes-led England in Multan. If not for slow over rate (12 overs), England would have been in a better position without the penalty points.
