As India and New Zealand lock horns in a highly-anticipated five-match T20I series, the spotlight has unexpectedly shifted to a familiar maestro in Bhuvneshwar Kumar returning to the international fold. New Zealand white-ball captain Mitchell Santner has issued a stern warning to his side, highlighting 36-year-old Indian fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar as a major threat. Santner noted that the veteran seamer will thoroughly enjoy the traditional seam-friendly tracks of New Zealand, stating that if there is even the slightest bit of assistance in the wicket, Bhuvneshwar has the craft to exploit it.
If there's anything in the wicket, he'll find something out of it: Santner
The return of Bhuvneshwar Kumar to the Indian T20I setup after a long hiatus has generated immense buzz. Famously known as the Swing King, Bhuvneshwar brings a tactical edge that could heavily tilt the balance of the series in India's favor. With New Zealand pitches offering early moisture, lateral movement, and carry, the veteran's mastery over the new ball is expected to test the host nation's top-order batters severely.
Ahead of the series opener in Christchurch, Mitchell Santner did not shy away from expressing his wariness. Addressing media persons, the Kiwi skipper pointed out how punishing modern pitches have become for bowlers, especially in India, where totals of 250 are routinely chased down.
"I think Bhuvi will love these conditions in New Zealand. If there's anything in the wicket, he'll find something out of it. [Even] on some flat ones in India, still manages to nip the ball and swing the ball. So with the new ball out here especially, he'll be a challenge," Santner said in the pre-match press conference.
"I mean in India it's pretty challenging as a bowler these days, like we've seen in the recent series [against West Indies], 250 getting chased down - who wants to be a bowler? - but he might like it out here a little better," he added.
Santner’s concerns are well-founded, given Bhuvneshwar’s phenomenal trajectory in domestic and franchise cricket over recent years while he was sitting out of India's fold. To understand his current resurgence, one must look at his exact statistics and numbers across the last four editions of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Bhuvneshwar has proven that age is just a number, consistently delivering phenomenal performances.
IPL 2023: Playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad, Bhuvneshwar featured in 14 matches, bowling 51 overs and conceding 425 runs. He picked up 16 wickets at an average of 26.56 and an economy rate of 8.33, which included a sensational five-wicket haul of 5/30.
IPL 2024: Shifting his focus to heavy workloads, he played 16 matches, delivering 57 overs. He claimed 11 wickets with a best bowling figure of 3/41, maintaining his reputation for suffocating batters in the powerplay despite a higher economy of 9.35.
IPL 2025: Moving to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Bhuvneshwar experienced a massive career renaissance, playing a vital role in helping his franchise capture the title. Across 14 matches and 52 overs, he snapped up 17 wickets at an average of 28.41 and a best of 3/33.
IPL 2026: Continuing his golden run with RCB to secure back-to-back league titles, he had one of his most prolific seasons ever. In 16 matches, he bowled 63 overs, scalping 28 wickets—the highest among pacers—at an exceptional average of 17.89 and an economy of 7.95, with a best bowling effort of 4/23.
Bhuvneshwar has a very good idea of how to dominate this format: Iyer
These numbers highlight a bowler who has only evolved despite sitting out of India's fold. Recognising this wealth of expertise, Indian T20I captain Shreyas Iyer also made big admissions ahead of the first T20I regarding what Bhuvneshwar brings to the dressing room. Iyer candidly said that the Indian bowling attack had been lacking senior guidance following a transition phase that introduced several young faces after previous global events.
"Bhuvi brings a lot of experience to the team, and we were lacking that, especially after the IPL. We had a lot of new bowlers. But in T20 cricket, if you see his career graph, he has won the IPL in each of the last two years. So, he has a very good idea of how to dominate this format." Iyer stated on the eve of T20I series opener.
Looking at the bigger picture, this New Zealand tour could serve as a vital audition for Bhuvneshwar Kumar to cement his case for the long run, specifically keeping the upcoming T20 World Cup blueprint in mind. If Bhuvneshwar can dismantle New Zealand's batting lineup in these seamer-friendly overseas conditions, it will send a resounding message to the selectors. Not just that it may also solve India's bowling woes, which were evident in the recently-concluded T20I series against West Indies, where hosts' bowlers looked leaking runs like a freebies. They conceded 200-plus totals in most of the matches, which only exposed the depth in Indian bowling. But the introduction of Bhuvneshwar may change the picture.
What happened the last time India toured NZ for T20I series?
The last time India toured New Zealand for a T20I outing back in 2022, they clinched the series 1–0.
1st T20I (Wellington): The series opener at Westpac Stadium was completely abandoned without a ball being bowled due to persistent rain.
2nd T20I (Mount Maunganui): India dominated the hosts to win by 65 runs. Powered by Suryakumar Yadav’s magnificent, unbeaten 111 off 51 balls, India posted a commanding total of 191/6. In response, New Zealand’s batting lineup crumbled, and they were bundled out for just 126 runs in 18.5 overs.
3rd T20I (Napier): The series finale ended in a tie via the D/L method after rain interrupted play. New Zealand was bowled out for 160 in 19.4 overs, anchored by Devon Conway (59) and Glenn Phillips (52). Mohammed Siraj starred with the ball, registering brilliant career-best figures of 4 for 17, alongside Arshdeep Singh, who also took four wickets. When rain stopped play during India's chase at 75/4 in 9 overs, the score was exactly par on the D/L par-score sheet, resulting in a tie that sealed the series 1–0 in India's favor. Suryakumar Yadav finished as the leading run-scorer.
