India's veteran all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has shed light on his struggles with mental health, revealing a period of darkness that prompted him to seek professional help. Ashwin has been named to India's Test squad for the upcoming series against South Africa but was not considered in the ODI and T20I teams.
In a recent interview with PTI, India's spin wizard opened up about his mental health struggles, revealing that he grappled with these issues for four to five years. He explained,“I am not being diplomatic, but for four to five years (since 2019), I found myself in a very dark space in life, and took help for mental health as well. In the dark space, I realised I have to be ready for any eventuality.”
In recent years, a growing number of cricketers have courageously shared their experiences with mental health struggles, breaking down stigmas and encouraging open dialogue about this crucial aspect of well-being. Cricketers like Ben Stokes and Virat Kohli have candidly discussed their own battles with mental health, highlighting the challenges they faced and the paths they took to overcome them.
Ravichandran Ashwin appears to be in a positive headspace, embracing his passion for the game with renewed enthusiasm. His recent inclusion in India's squad for the ICC World Cup 2023, despite limited playing time, signifies his resilience and unwavering commitment to the sport. The spinner's cheerful demeanor and support for the team's success exemplify his positive outlook and the progress he has made in managing his mental health.
Ashwin also delved into his thoughts on his future beyond cricket, revealing his intention to explore new avenues once his cricket career comes to an end. He emphasised that the day he feels a lack of passion or motivation for bowling or batting will be the day he decides to hang up his boots. He elaborated,"I have been preparing for life after cricket for five years. But I continued to work hard on my cricket; to contribute with the bat, I went to the USA and practised baseball. The day I lose this motivation, I feel irritated about waking up in the morning to bowl or bat, I know it is over. I will then quit immediately, say thanks to all and go on to the next chapter in life.”
