'I never thought I’d get to play Test cricket again,' says KL Rahul

Last one year has been an upside down one for India Test team vice captain KL Rahul. From being just a backup opener to being Virat Kohli’s deputy, it has been nothing less than a sensational journey for the Bengaluru-born batsman.

So far, the Karnataka batsman has scored 2321 runs in 40 Tests with an average of 35.17. Now with the added responsibility of being the vice-captain, a lot will be expected from the 29-year-old.

While speaking to his teammate Mayank Agarwal on a video posted by BCCI’s official website, he described his journey. Rahul went on to say how big a privilege it is for him to take up this role. Rahul also did not forget to talk about the added responsibility that his new role is going to offer.

“Look obviously 6-7 months ago or a year ago I never thought I’d get to play Test cricket again, but yeah things have turned around quite quickly and I’m very very happy, grateful, and very honoured that such a huge responsibility is been given to me. I’m now looking forward to giving my best like I always do. I’ll try and help the team achieve more success” said Rahul.

Partners in Karnataka and IPL

Agarwal and Rahul have shared the dressing for the Karnataka state team and have also opened the innings together for Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the last four years.

Rahul hoped their partnership will help them to score runs together and win India matches, starting with the opening Test against South Africa beginning on December 26.

"My journey has been beautiful, I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. You have been part of my journey and I have been in yours and we both had to work hard for this, for both of us it has been a beautiful journey.

"We had our doubts if we play for India and we never gave up our dreams and worked harder and it is amazing to sometimes sit back and think how we started and where we are today, it is magical for me.

"It is just the beginning for us and we still have a long way to go and the friendship and understanding we have shared for so many years will only help us build better partnership and win more matches for the country," Rahul explained.
