Indian skipper KL Rahul made four changes to the side for the third ODI at Newlands, Cape Town after winning the toss and electing to field first. Hard-hitting battter Suryakumar Yadav, spin all-rounder Jayant Yadav, Prasidh Krishna and Deepak Chahar replaced Venkatesh Iyer, Ravichandran Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Shardul Thakur respectively.

Proteas skipper Temba Bavuma on the other hand, made just a single change to the squad. Dwaine Pretorius came in the squad in place of spinner Tabraiz Shamsi.

Indian team had previously suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat in the three-match Test series against South Africa and now the Indian ODI team under the leadership of stand-in skipper Rahul have lost two back-to-back ODIs and are currently aiming to avoid a humiliating whitewash.

Both India’s batting and bowling have been hugely criticised in the series till now. In India's two losses, apart of the team’s performance, skipper Rahul’s tactics have been questioned by former cricketers as well.
