Rohit Sharma is unlikely to lead India in upcoming ODI series against South Africa as he has not recovered from the hamstring injury which ruled him out of the ongoing Test series. In the absence of new ODI captain, his opening partner KL Rahul is expected to lead India in the ODI series starting January 19.
“Rohit Sharma is not fully fit and it would not be feasible to send him to South Africa with the squad for the ODI series if he does not recover in time. In case of new ODI skipper’s absence, KL Rahul will be given the charge of captaincy,” the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) source told Sports Tak.
After consistent performances in recently concluded 50-over Vijay Hazare Trophy, Maharashtra captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and Madhya Pradesh all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer are likely to get selected for the ODI teams. Also, veteran players Ravichandran Ashwin and Shikhar Dhawan are expected to make a comeback. The squad for the ODI series is likely to be announced later this week.
“Selectors are likely to be meet on January 30 or 31. It is also expected that Ashwin, Dhawan, Ruturaj and Iyer will be joining the team. No decision has been taken on Shahrukh Khan but the discussions have taken place,” the source added.
Tamil Nadu’s Shahrukh has emerged as a bankable finisher in recent times with his performances in Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. In the domestic T20 tournament, he led his team to victory with a last-ball six in the final. His role was also crucial in Tamil Nadu reaching the final of the List A tournament.
