India secured an emphatic win in the second T20I against the West Indies in Guyana courtesy of Tilak Varma's impressive unbeaten 49 runs. He missed out on a second consecutive half-century after hitting a match-winning six but this move sparked controversy and debate among cricket enthusiasts and experts alike.
However, a leading cricket expert has shared his support for Hardik Pandya. Commentator Harsha Bhogle tweeted that a milestone like a half-century need not be celebrated in the shortest format of international cricket and that individual achievements should not take the light off team achievements.
"I am puzzled by the discussion around Tilak Varma missing out on a 50. It isn't a landmark, in fact, other than a century (which is rare), there are no landmarks in T20 cricket. We are far too obsessed with individual achievement within a team sport. I don't believe the 50s should be recorded in individual stats in T20 cricket. If you have made enough runs quickly enough (avg and SR), that is all that matters," he wrote on Twitter.
The match scenario was reminiscent of MS Dhoni's decision during the semi-finals of the 2014 T20 World Cup against South Africa. Virat Kohli, having played spectacularly, was just a run short of victory. Dhoni, displaying exemplary leadership, played a dot ball, allowing Kohli the opportunity to secure the winning run. This strategic move by Dhoni was lauded globally.
About the match
Team India's pursuit of the 160-run target began with a hiccup, losing debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal early in the chase. Despite this setback, a resilient Suryakumar initiated his innings with dynamic boundaries. Shubman Gill's brief stint was cut short, but Tilak Varma stepped up, producing a pivotal partnership with Suryakumar, effectively diminishing the host's chances.
The duo of Tilak and Pandya smoothly carried Team India over the line, with Pandya finishing the match in style and Tilak Varma standing unbeaten, showcasing his talent once again.
This entry into international cricket has been nothing short of magical, and the young batter from Hyderabad will finally be happy that a knock off his bat came in a winning cause.
