Team India captain Rohit Sharma gave an update on fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who underwent back surgery earlier in the year and is believed to be recovering well and has been bowling a few overs regularly in the NCA nets. In a recent update released by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), there were ominous updates regarding Bumrah's progress in rehabilitation as the right-arm pacer is scheduled to play practice matches at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru.
The Hitman also confirmed that the team management is in constant touch with the NCA staff and at the moment, everyone is positive about Bumrah's recovery from injury sooner rather than later. The Indian skipper said that he can't confirm whether Bumrah will be part of India's squad for Ireland T20Is but underlined the importance of match practice for the Indian pacer.
"The amount of experience he (Bumrah) brings is very important. Right now he’s coming from a serious injury and I’ve no idea if he’ll travel to Ireland because the team hasn’t been announced yet," Rohit said.
"If he gets to play then it’s good and we hope he plays before the World Cup. When a player returns from a serious injury, match fitness, match feeling are some key components, which are missing,” said Rohit at the press conference ahead of the 1st ODI.
"We’ll see what has been planned and everything depends on his recovery. We are in constant touch with the NCA and things look positive at the moment," the Indian captain added.
Pestered by the recurring back injury, Bumrah has been sidelined for almost a year which has cost India big time in the mega events including the recent WTC final. Bumrah's absence has hurt India not just in the WTC final but also in last year's Asia Cup and T20 World Cup. Thus, the BCCI doesn't want to take any more chances with Bumrah as they want the senior pacer to be available for selection in India's World Cup squad.
Bumrah hasn't complained of any significant pain during his rehab process. There have been reports that Bumrah might make a comeback to the Indian side when the senior team travels to Ireland for a three-match T20I series.
