Indian cricket's bright young talent, Tilak Varma, made a memorable debut against West Indies on August 3, 2023. At just 20 years of age, Varma's debut performance was nothing less than extraordinary, as he scored 39 runs in just 22 balls and took two catches in winning cause in his first T20I appearance for India.
Speaking about Varma's remarkable debut, former Indian star batter Wasim Jaffer lavished praise on the young gun in an interview with ESPNCricinfo, ahead of the second T20I against West Indies on August 6.
"He looked impressive. There were no nerves at all. The way he started, it seemed like he was playing a club game or for his state team. No pressure at all," Jaffer commented.
Jaffer further highlighted Varma's mental fortitude and confidence on the field, stating, "That's the good thing about him - it shows that he's mentally very strong. He was the only one who looked very comfortable on this pitch."
Varma's ability to play a variety of shots caught Jaffer's attention as well. His batting performance was filled with impressive shots that demonstrated his skill and form.
"The shots that he played, not just the big ones, even the slices through third man and the other shots, shows that he was in good form," Jaffer observed.
However, Jaffer expressed regret that Varma could not add more runs to his total, which could have put India in a commanding position. "He would be disappointed that he couldn't score 20-odd more runs. If Varma had got 50 or 60, India would have got home. Sanju Samson's run-out also cost them. He was looking good," he added.
In spite of the defeat, Varma's debut is viewed as a positive sign for the future of Indian cricket. His extraordinary performance has garnered praise not only from cricketing legends but also his contemporaries. His teammate, Arshdeep Singh, lauded him, stating, "he is massively talented and he did so well on his debut."
Varma's ascent in cricket has been nothing short of impressive. Starting from his First-Class debut for Hyderabad in the 2018-19 Ranji Trophy, followed by his stint with Mumbai Indians in the IPL, to making a remarkable entrance on the international stage, Varma's journey reflects his abundant potential and promise for the future of Indian cricket.
