Gujarat Titans' Australian recruit Spencer Johnson has signed with Surrey for eight matches in the upcoming Vitality Blast 2024. Johnson did not make it into Australia's T20 World Cup 2024 squad.
The left-arm pacer has good record in England playing franchise cricket. Last year, he was impressive for Oval Invincibles in The Hundred. He took five wickets for them including a sensational spell of three wickets for one run from 20 deliveries against Manchester Originals.
"I'm very excited to join Surrey and I have some fantastic memories from playing at the Kia Oval last year," Johnson said. "Surrey have a great squad and I can't wait to contribute with the ball in front of the packed out crowds in south London."
The T20 Blast will commence on May 19. However, after the opening match, the next set of matches will start on May 30. With GT unlikely to make it into the playoffs, Johnson will join the Surrey camp way before their first match of the season against Hampshire in Southampton. The tournament will take place during T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA and West Indies. Surrey's director of men's cricket is happy with getting Johnson's services for the first eight games.
"Spencer is a highly talented cricketer who has shown his skills in white-ball cricket at the highest levels. He will add strength to our bowling unit in the first part of the group stages when we have four players away at the World Cup with England," Stewart said.
Johnson’s maiden IPL season
He was picked for Rs 10 crore after a bidding war with Delhi Capitals (DC). The 28-year-old has not been in best of forms in his maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) season. He has four wickets from five games. Also, his economy rate is 9.44 runs per over. Johnson has not got a chance for more than three weeks. In his previous appearance against DC on April 17, he conceded 22 runs from two overs and got the wicket of in-form Jake Fraser-McGurk. GT are currently at the bottom of the points table with four wins from 11 games.
