Former Pakistan pacer Wasim Akram, who previously criticised Mumbai Indians’ (MI) decision to remove Rohit Sharma as skipper, expressed his desire to see him join Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) next season under Gautam Gambhir’s mentorship. Notably, Rohit was sacked as captain of MI before the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 and Hardik Pandya was handed over the reins.
The decision to replace Rohit as captain has faced backlash from fans. Pandya has been booed at venues and faced widespread criticism on social media. The captaincy move has not yielded a lot of success as MI currently sit at the ninth spot on the points table with eight points. On the flip side, KKR lead the points table with eight wins in 11 matches under Shreyas Iyer's captaincy.
While speaking on Sportskeeda, the legendary Pakistan captain said he would love to see the five-time IPL-winning skipper be part of KKR in the upcoming season.
"I have a feeling, he won't be at Mumbai Indians next season. I would love to see him at KKR. Imagine him open there, Gauti as a mentor, Iyer as a captain. They will have a very strong batting, at that wicket (Eden Gardens). He bats very well on any wicket, he is that great a player. But it will be good to see him at KKR," Akram told Sportskeeda.
Meanwhile, Rohit began the tournament on a high but his form declined in the last few matches of the IPL 2024 as he has managed to score just 33 runs in the last five innings. His recent struggles raise concern for the Indian team as he will captain the men in blue in the upcoming T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies. His best performance of the season came against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) when he scored an unbeaten century in the losing cause.
Rohit will be in action when MI will take on KKR at Eden Gardens on May 11.
