Gavaskar believes that the amount KKR paid for Mitchell Starc was excessive.

KKR spent Rs 24.75 crore on Mitchell Starc in the IPL 2024 auction.

Starc has now become the highest-paid player in IPL history.

Legendary Indian batter Sunil Gavaskar has raised concerns over Kolkata Knight Riders' (KKR) decision to spend Rs 24.75 crore on Mitchell Starc for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), stating that no player is worth such a hefty amount.

Starc marked his return to the IPL with a bang, emerging as the highest-paid player in the tournament's history. KKR engaged in a fierce bidding war with Gujarat Titans (GT) for the services of the Australian pacer, ultimately securing his signature.

In an interview with Star Sports, Gavaskar said that no one deserves such a large sum of money, specifically referring to Starc's transfer to KKR. Starc's acquisition surpassed the previous record set by Australia captain Pat Cummins (Rs 20.50 crore), making him the most expensive player in IPL history.

Don't think anybody is worth that kind of money: Gavaskar

"Over the top, to be absolutely frank. I don't think anybody is worth that kind of money. If Starc can make an impact and win maybe four out of the 14 matches that he plays, then you can say money's worth. Then if he makes contributions in the other games - absolutely fantastic," said Gavaskar.

He went on to say that Starc would need to deliver match-winning performances in at least four out of KKR's 14 matches in the IPL 2024 season. Starc ended with 16 wickets in 10 matches as Australia won the 2023 ODI World Cup, defeating hosts India in the final in Ahmedabad on November 20, 2023.

"He has got to bowl match-winning spells in at least four out of the 14 matches, and maybe the crucial matches against the Mumbai Indians, the Chennai Super Kings and RCB, because these three have top-class batting lineups. Bowl those teams out and you could even then say - money's worth," Gavaskar added.

CAN'T WAIT TO EXPERIENCE EDEN GARDENS: STARC

Starc has prior experience in the IPL, having represented Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in 2014 and 2015. In 2018, KKR acquired Starc for INR 9.40 crore, but he was unable to participate due to an injury.

"Hey, KKR fans. I'm thrilled to be joining the team for this year's IPL. And I can't wait to get to Eden Gardens to experience the home fans, the home crowd and the atmosphere. I look forward to seeing you then. Ami KKR," Starc was quoted as saying in a video uploaded by KKR.

Expressing his excitement after being selected by KKR for the upcoming IPL season, Starc mentioned his eagerness to soak in the atmosphere at Eden Gardens. During his time with RCB in 2014 and 2015, Starc claimed 34 wickets in 27 matches.
