The new Ahmedabad franchise of Indian Premier League (IPL) are eyeing Indian head coach Ravi Shastri and support staff Bharat Arun (bowling coach) and R Sridhar (fielding coach). A source close to the development told Sports Tak that the representative of CVC Capitals expressed their desire to rope in Shastri and Co. in UAE during the ongoing T20 World Cup and later had a meeting with Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officials regarding the same.
Shastri’s stint as India’s head coach ends with the completion of T20 World Cup 2021. His replacement has already been named by BCCI in the form of former skipper Rahul Dravid who will be joining the team for home series against New Zealand.
There are also talks that Shastri is likely to resume commentary and is yet to take a decision on whether he wants to coach the new franchise in the 10-team tournament next year.
If Shastri gets associated with the new team, he will have to give up on direct commentary contract with BCCI because of Conflict of Interest rules. However, the 59-year-old can follow VVS Laxman who has a direct contract from the broadcaster despite his involvement with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).
Earlier CVC Capitals brought the Ahmedabad team for a mind-boggling Rs 5,600 crore in October 2021. The franchise will be able to pick three players before the mega auction including two Indian and one overseas player.
